The 2016-2017 Season — Musical Migrations

Programming for our 2016-17 season focuses on a topic that is as relevant today as it was in the 18th century: migration. The migration of musicians and their music in the Old and New Worlds shaped the musical environments in which these musicians found themselves, changing the course of music history.

Our November program, Baltic Sojourn, is a sampling of some of the characterful music brought by German, Italian, and local musicians to Latvia, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, and Russia. The program showcases outstanding sonatas, concertos, and suites by Müthel, Szarzynski, Scheibe, Roman, and Dall’Oglio.

In December, Christmas in the New World will take listeners to the Baroque churches of Central and South America where Spanish and local composers were writing lively villancicos and ornate Italian-style cantatas for Christmas celebrations. Catherine Hedberg and Jessica Petrus are the featured vocal soloists, and Baroque guitarist Eloy Cruz will return to collaborate with the ensemble on this festive program.

Our March concerts, Destination London, will transport audiences to one of the musical meccas of the 18th century that was a magnet for musicians from all over Europe. Soprano Teresa Wakim will make her debut with the group in performances of works by Handel, Bononcini, Pepusch, and Sammartini—all prominent transplants who each contributed to London’s bustling concert life.

Our April season finale program, Scores From the Suitcase, explores superb European chamber music that was imported to communities across early America. A special focus will be on reviving captivating works by Haydn, Graun, Antes, and Grimm, including treasures found in the Moravian collections in Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

We encourage you to subscribe to all four concerts to experience the richness of these offerings and to take advantage of the many perks you can take advantage of. We look forward to sharing this cache of musical riches with you and to meeting you at our post-concert receptions!
