Outreach

Musicians of the Old Post Road is committed to reaching diverse audiences—from school-aged children to senior citizens. The ensemble brings presentations and performances to students that allow them to experience a variety of musical periods, styles, instruments, and composers. The ensemble also delights in bringing open rehearsals to senior communities.

The ensemble's educational outreach programs have reached thousands of students in Boston and the surrounding areas since its founding in 1989.

What I learned from the musicians is to follow your dreams because you can accomplish them

In Boston, the ensemble has brought presentations to the Charles Taylor Elementary School, the Trotter School, the Everett School, the Kenney School, the Lucy Stone School (all in Dorchester), the Mather School in Roxbury, and the J.F.K. School in Jamaica Plain.

I find it to be a real privilege to see instruments (rare ones) up close and hear music live! I just love classical music!

The group has also brought educational performances to students at Sudbury High School, the Rivers School, and All-Newton Music School. MOPR has an ongoing partnership with Hudson High School, bringing its musical expertise to student audiences encompassing multiple disciplines and academic areas within the High School, reaching students in music theory classes, band, chorus, drama, public speaking, and Spanish.

The ensemble has held residencies at Dartmouth College, Berwick Academy in southern Maine and Madison Park High School in Boston. They included multiple performances, sectionals for instrumentalists, masterclasses, and workshops on various musical topics. For the Charles Taylor Elementary School in Dorchester, the ensemble held a two-year residency themed Composer of the Month, which brought monthly presentation-performances into the classroom where students learned about legendary musicians.

In its ongoing quest to bring historic musical performance to diverse audiences, the ensemble regularly offers open dress rehearsals to retirement communities throughout the region, including Newbury Court (Concord, MA) and NewBridge on the Charles (Dedham), and has offered presentations at senior centers such as the Callahan Center in Framingham, MA.

Support the Ensemble

In order to further broaden its educational reach to youth, the ensemble is in the process of a major website expansion, with a plan to develop educational resources on its website that will be made available for free to educators of elementary, middle school, and high school students worldwide. Resources will include curricula tools for teachers across a broad array of disciplines, including teachers of social studies, mathematics, language skills, and music, among others.
